The Pearl has quickly become one of my favorite locations for family photos in San Antonio—and this session reminded me exactly why.
Between the greenery, fountains, classic brick architecture, open walkways, and soft morning light, it creates a setting that feels both relaxed and timeless. It has a polished, upscale atmosphere while still feeling welcoming for families with young children, which can be surprisingly hard to find.
This particular session was especially meaningful to me because it reunited our families after years of friendship and military life taking us in different directions.
When we first met several years ago, our husbands were both connected through flight medicine and Army aviation while we were stationed in Wichita, Kansas. Her husband is a helicopter pilot in the Army, and over time our families built a friendship that made this session feel much more personal than simply meeting for photos.
Not long after we got to know each other, military life took them elsewhere through a PCS move, which made reconnecting in San Antonio for this session feel especially sweet.
And honestly, sessions like this are one of the reasons I love photography so much.
They allow us to preserve people and seasons of life that otherwise pass by far too quickly.

One of the biggest concerns parents have before a session is usually the same:
“What if my kids don’t cooperate?”
And honestly? That’s completely normal.
This family has four children ranging from ages three to eight, so there was plenty of energy throughout the session—which is exactly what I expect with young kids.
Children are not meant to stand perfectly still and smile on command for an hour.
The best family photos rarely come from perfection anyway.
They come from interaction.
They come from movement, laughter, curiosity, little moments between siblings, and the personalities that naturally unfold when kids feel comfortable enough to be themselves.
That’s why a huge part of my approach during family sessions is keeping things moving and engaging.
During this session, I spent a lot of time:
One of my favorite memories from this session happened when all four children were sitting together on a bench.
Everything had lined up perfectly for a sweet sibling photo—and then the youngest made a funny face that immediately sent all four kids into laughter.
Those are the moments I love most.
Not perfectly posed smiles.
Real reactions.
Real connection.
And because we kept the atmosphere relaxed and playful, we were able to move efficiently through a huge variety of images within their one-hour session without the kids feeling overwhelmed or exhausted.

Tegan was in San Antonio on a trip, with kids, in summer. We previously discussed taking photos at home to avoid the heat, but that wasn’t an option for her family. I can only imagine how stressed she was leading up to these photos- I mean, taking your updated photos 2 years later, out of suitcases, on a trip, far from home?
One of the things Tegan mentioned afterward that meant the most to me was how much she appreciated the preparation and efficiency during their family photos at the Pearl.
As a mom herself, she understood how important it was to maximize time while keeping things enjoyable for the kids.
She shared:
“Christina is great at capturing the attention of our wandering toddlers. She prepares ahead so she maximized our time and kept things moving, which is a blessing with small children. It didn’t take long for her to photograph a variety of great memories for our family.”
That preparation starts long before the session itself.
Before every family shoot, I help clients:
This allows families to arrive feeling more relaxed and less uncertain.
Parents already carry enough mental load.
Family photos should not feel like another stressful task to manage.
Especially for military families, busy professionals, or parents balancing multiple children and schedules, having a clear plan makes all the difference.
And once the session begins, my goal is to keep things flowing naturally so families can focus more on being together and less on worrying about what comes next.

This was the second time I photographed this family, which always feels incredibly meaningful.
There is something deeply personal about someone trusting you again to document their family.
Photography is intimate in a way many services are not.
Families are inviting you into their relationships, their personalities, their children’s different stages of life, and moments they hope to remember for years to come.
So when clients return, especially years later and across different states or seasons of life, it says so much about the experience they had the first time.
Tegan shared:
“One of my absolute favorites is a semi-candid shot she took of my oldest daughter. This is the second time Christina has taken our family pictures and we are always pleased with her work.”
That kind of trust is never something I take lightly.
And honestly, reconnecting with families over the years is one of the most rewarding parts of this job.
Military life especially has a way of scattering friendships across the country.
People move.
Assignments change.
Children grow up quickly.
Photos become one of the few ways we can pause and hold onto those seasons before they disappear into memory.

One of the reasons I continue recommending The Pearl for family sessions is because of how versatile the space is.
Within a relatively small area, you can create an entire gallery that feels visually diverse.
During this session, we used:
This creates a gallery that feels dynamic and polished without requiring families to travel between multiple locations.
The environment also works especially well for:
And because so much of the area is thoughtfully designed, there are very few distracting backgrounds or harsh visual elements to work around.
For parents, this matters more than they realize.
It means less stress about “finding the perfect spot” and more confidence that the final images will feel cohesive and beautiful.

One thing I’ve learned after years of photographing families is that every session has its own rhythm.
Some children are shy.
Others are energetic.
Some warm up immediately.
Others need a little time.
Being able to adapt quickly while still keeping sessions calm and organized is something that only really comes through experience.
Especially with multiple children, sessions can shift quickly from one mood to another.
A toddler may suddenly lose interest.
A sibling might need encouragement.
Someone gets distracted.
Someone gets silly.
And honestly—that’s all completely normal.
My role during the session is not to force perfection.
It’s to guide families through those moments in a way that still produces authentic, beautiful images while keeping the experience enjoyable for everyone involved.
That balance between structure and flexibility is something I care deeply about.
Because when families feel relaxed, the photos naturally reflect that.

I think one of the reasons parents value family photography so deeply is because they know how quickly these stages pass.
The tiny expressions.
The missing teeth.
The sibling dynamics.
The way your child reaches for your hand without thinking.
At the time, these moments feel ordinary.
But years later, they become the details you miss the most.
Sessions like this remind me why documenting families matters.
Not because everything needs to look perfect.
But because these seasons deserve to be remembered while they are still unfolding.

If you’ve been considering family photos at The Pearl in San Antonio, I would absolutely recommend it—especially for families wanting a location that feels both relaxed and elevated.
Weekday mornings are often ideal for:
The Pearl also photographs beautifully year-round and works especially well with neutral, earthy, or softly coordinated wardrobe palettes.
