FAQ: How to Find the Right Photographer
Q: How do I find the right photographer?
A: To find the right photographer doesn’t necessarily mean the cheapest, or most expensive. They haven’t always been doing it the longest, or now the most recent TikTok trends. What matters first is matching their work to your situation. Make sure their work shows someone like YOU (family with little children, couples, weddings, maternity, newborn, etc.) Then, see if who they are matches your personality.
Q: How far in advance should we book a family portrait session?
A: Booking 4 to 6 weeks in advance is ideal, especially for popular outdoor seasons like fall and spring, to secure optimal golden-hour lighting slots and weekend availability.
Q: What should our family wear for an outdoor photography session?
A: Coordinate outfits using complementary, neutral, or warm earth tones rather than strictly matching colors. Avoid large logos, bright neon shades, or heavy patterns so the focus remains on your family’s expressions. I include a free style guide for my clients when they book.
Q: How do you handle toddlers or active kids who won’t sit still?
A: I structure family sessions with little children around play and authentic movement rather than rigid posing. Keeping the environment light, interactive, and patient allows children to relax, resulting in natural, candid smiles. The best photos are often when the kids are being themselves, playing and having fun, rather than posing.
Q: What happens if it rains or bad weather pops up on session day?
A: Weather forecasts are tracked closely leading up to your session. If rain, extreme heat, or high winds prevent an outdoor shoot, your session is rescheduled to the next available open date at no extra cost. I recently had a client this happened to in a very stressful season of her life, and we were able to work around rains, floods, clouds, heat, and even a tornado!

Q: How Much Will it Cost?
A: Photographers charge all kinds of prices. Some are new, or work in a studio where a company books or attracts the client- they may charge as little as $100. Some shoot only wealthy clientele, and will charge over a $1,000 a session. Most will charge within $50 of each other, ranging from $250 for a shorter or discounted, or around $450 for a full session.
As photographers gain experience, demand, repeat clientele, upgraded equipment, and match cost of living, they will increase their prices about once a year.
Look out for photographers who charge a price for a session, then will charge more money to deliver the edited photos!
I personally am 100% up-front and transperant on pricing. I don’t limit photos and only charge the session fee (time slot). Full sessions typically end up with around 40 photos, mini sessions around 20 (I often over-deliver on these). You get every good one that came out of the time slot, and don’t pay more per photo. I don’t charge for prints, disks, drives, etc. You get permanent access to your digital gallery and 100% downloadable rights.
